Kyle's soil is the thing to get right
Kyle sits on the edge of the Blackland Prairie, and that clay is expansive. It swells when it is wet and shrinks hard in an August drought, and it moves several inches through a year doing it. This is the single most important difference between building here and building out in the Hill Country, where limestone sits still.
What it means in practice: footings have to reach below the active zone, and a post on a surface block or a shallow pier will move with the soil. A structure that moves opens its tie-in to the house, and that is how a patio cover becomes a roof leak. On fences it is why posts heave and gates stop latching after the first big wet-dry cycle.
None of this is exotic. It is just depth, and depth is cheap at build time and expensive to fix afterwards. We dig for the soil we are actually in.
New subdivisions, young canopy
Plum Creek, Blanco Vista, 6 Creeks and Steeplechase all went up recently enough that the trees have not filled in. That changes what we recommend.
On an unshaded Kyle lot, a dark composite deck board gets genuinely too hot to stand on barefoot in July. Go light on the colour, or build the shade first. Frankly, on most of these lots the patio cover is a better first purchase than the deck, because a surface you cannot use in summer is not solving the problem you have.
